The China Communication University Media Museum is the first national-level, comprehensive media museum in China that integrates five key functions: “media cultural relic collection, media artifact exhibition, media history research, media creative education, and media experience services.” Its establishment fills two gaps in China—one in museum categories and the other in the media industry.
The museum includes four branches—broadcasting, television, film, and transmission—which were completed and opened to the public on October 26, 2012. It has developed an exhibition layout featuring “four halls, seven sections, and a media technology corridor,” with an exhibition area of approximately 3,000 square meters. The museum houses over 12,000 items, including 1,000 documents, archival photos, 4,000 audio and video materials, and 7,000 media cultural relics. The exhibitions primarily highlight significant historical milestones in the development of broadcasting, television, and film, both domestically and internationally, emphasizing “historical continuity, rich heritage, detailed historical data, and the transformation of the times,” all while embodying the vision of an intellectually rich media museum.
On December 26, 2012, the museum received approval from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Heritage, officially becoming the 164th registered museum in Beijing open to the public. In 2013, it was awarded the title of “Citizen Learning Base” by Beijing, and on February 24, 2017, it was designated as a “Beijing Popular Science Base.” On September 18, 2018, the museum was awarded the “National Level 3 Museum” designation by the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the China Museum Association, making it the only university museum in Beijing to receive this honor.
The Media Museum is also a key member of the Beijing University Museum Alliance, serving as the vice-chair unit of the alliance, and the chairman of both the New Media and Communication Professional Committee and the China University Museum Professional Committee.
The China Communication University History Museum, another key cultural project, serves as an important platform to showcase the university’s history and achievements, as well as a place for the education of traditional culture and school spirit. It is also a cultural landmark that strengthens the bond with alumni. The History Museum opened on June 18, 2019, with an exhibition area of 1,600 square meters, located in the same building as the Media Museum and Library. Together, they form a public cultural service system that integrates media education, media culture, and the media industry. The History Museum includes three main sections: a basic history exhibition, a teaching practice experience area, and a teaching achievement display area. Through images, text, physical objects, and multimedia, it comprehensively presents the history of the university, highlights its academic strengths, and showcases its contributions to the national news industry.
